BASIC CLIMBING TERMS

Common words and phrases used in the indoor rock gym.

  • Hangdog:

    When a leader hangs from a piece of protection to rest, then continues on lowering back to the ground.
  • Dihedral:

    The inside corner of rock.
  • Top Rope:

    A method of climbing where the rope is attached to a fixed point above the climber.
  • Climb On:

    The belayer's response that they are ready to belay the rope.
  • Smear:

    To stand on the front of the foot and gain friction against the rock across the breadth of the sole to adhere to the rock.
  • Carabiners:

    Aluminum Alloy rings equipped with a snap gate - sometimes called biners.
